Groundhog Day

Its roots are ancient Scots and from the craggy weathered shadows comes the rhyme -

If Candlemas Day is bright and clear,
there'll be two winters in the year.

Candlemas or Imolc (in the neopagan) is a cross-quarter day or a day that falls halfway between the equinoxes and solstices. Considering Imolc's six week stretch to the first day of spring, it's easy to see where the groundhog day fun comes from.  A common burrow animal, inclement weather and the hope for a bright new spring, and all the growth that comes with.

Punxsutawney Pennsylvania is and likely will remain the Official Groundhog Day Capital. The famous groundhog Punxatawney Phil makes his home in a hollow stump there and is the official groundhog of the United States. Each year, just like in the movie with Bill Murray - Groundhog Day, media gather to report Phil's success with an early spring, or the sighs finding out it's going to be a longer winter.  Even the president calls to find out Phil's results.
